Our Occupational Therapists trained in psychotherapy provide specialized, trauma-informed support for individuals recovering from the psychological impact of workplace/operational stress, injury, or motor vehicle accidents. We also work extensively with first responders and public safety personnel who experience the cumulative effects of exposure to trauma in their line of work.
Through a combination of evidence-based psychotherapy approaches—such as Behavioural Activation and Exposure Therapy, using therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)—our therapists help clients process distressing experiences, manage anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress symptoms, and rebuild safety and improve function in daily life such as work, leisure, and self-care.
What makes OT psychotherapy distinct is its focus on the how of recovery: helping clients gradually re-engage in meaningful routines, relationships, and work roles that may have been disrupted by trauma or other life events impacting their mental health. Treatment is practical and goal-oriented, emphasizing self-regulation strategies, stress management, and the restoration of confidence and function in daily life. With our approach of community-based treatment at FunctionAbility, we create an immersive treating environment where we can participate and practice psychotherapy alongside clients in places that are most important to them and where they spend the most amount of time, including their homes, surrounding community or workplaces, to have the greatest impact.
